There are not enough words to thank you all for what you deal with every day. When I see law enforcement, I always feel better knowing you've "got my six" even when I am a total stranger. I know officers personally and my husband is a corrections officer. I worry about you, while I remain in awe of your dedication and skills. Like I said, thank you just isn't enough!

My family and I just returned from 4 days in Omaha at the College Word Series, and we were VERY impressed with the police presence along the route from our hotel (Embassy Suites) to TD Ameritrade Park and in the surrounding area. We felt safer than at home in Nashville. Thanks a million for all you do. We appreciate you! Also saddened by the recent senseless loss of Kerrie Orozco. Our prayers are with you.

Pam Leach

Thank you for the courage and dedication you exhibit to help keep us safe. Our son-in-law is in the Army and we appreciate the high level of support we see for the U.S. military. I think Americans need to realize, however, that first responders are the domestic equivalent, that you protect us at home in the same way the military does abroad. Thank you for your service.

Pat Voelker

I want to say thank you to the Omaha, Council Bluffs, and surrounding communities for the support, honor, and dignity all demonstrated during Officer Orozco's funeral processing. From my cruiser, I felt the broken hearts, and the sadness. I heard when people said "thank you" and "God bless you." I saw the children saluting, and the mothers crying. There were some teary eyes in my police car as well. I have never been so proud of my community. I have never been so proud to be a police officer. Remember Officer Orozco's legacy - think less of self and more about others.

Officer Kenneth Dohrmann, Valley Police Dept.

You do a job that's increasingly hazardous in today's world. You tread a fine line to serve and protect every single day, carrying weapons that kill and maim into life threatening situations while being told "Do your job and keep us safe with weapons of death and destruction, but cross this line and your professional life is over." I've had just a small taste of the power and authority your badge affords you and it is terrifying to contemplate how easily a few seemingly small and inconsequential abuses of that power can turn you into a monster. The perversion of the responsibility to protect is an insidious and constant threat to those who take the oath. It fills me with enormous gratitude to consider that out of the majority of officers who take their responsibility seriously and live by their code that only a fallen few stray. I'm thankful for the noble men and women who take their calling to serve and protect seriously and willingly lay their lives on the line for citizens each day. Thank you.

Christopher

I want to Thank you. It is with a heavy heart that I want to honor what Kerrie Orozco did to make a difference. If her passing would cause 12 more people to become active in the same causes, imagine the difference it could make! #extendKerrie'sheart

We remember the officers who changed our lives, The men and woman who protected us day and night, People who respect for their dedication to the cause, For when faced with danger, they never even pause. We remember the officers who always stood true, Whatever the color of uniform, brown gray or blue, With pride and integrity they say To serve and protect, For the giving of their life, we offer our respect. We remember the officers who we never really knew, Persons strong enough to answer the challenge are few, With heavy hearts we mourn the officers in eternal rest, There's more to these people than the badge on their chest. - Author Unknown Gold has your back Blue

With sincere appreciation, my husband and I are thankful for the Omaha Police Department, and the security it provides for our community. While witnessing the Omaha Chief of Police, interact with the public during most difficult situations, he has earned our trust. We have observed time and again, his professional respect for others, and the high standard of dignity he expects from his officers. With that being said, the knowledge, bravery, and control of adrenalin on top of emotion, is a constant factor in which every officer schools himself on a daily basis, both mentally and physically. We, as the general public, do not live in their world of witnessing children and adults who have been harmed in ways we cannot imagine, and while maintaining both composure and compassion, seek to serve and protect at the same time. No system is perfect and when there are breakdowns, communicating and resolving in a manner that accomplishes the most benefit for everyone, looks to be the goal of our Omaha Police Department. With that in mind, in a city this size, we can positively say, "thank you for a job well done". We truly appreciate each of you. May God always be with you and your families. Extending most high regards,

David and Jeanie

I want to thank you...for serving the Omaha area and pertecting us

Laura Meents

We just had an officer show up regarding a car parked in a handicap zone. This was the most sincere, police officer I have ever met!! Working in the Medical field and with children with Autism, families wait months to get it our facility. When the officer arrived, the words that he spoke were, "I would like to just inform this family they need to move their car, I don't really want to give them a ticket since they drove from a few hours away, are having a hard time finding a place to park and then me giving them a ticket", he stated. "That would not be fair to their children." Our parking here is terrible. I wish I would of got his name but I didn't and would like to find out who he was so I can let the Department know what a good job he did. He represented the Omaha Police Department in an excellent manner. He was truly an amazing person. He looked out for our families.

Tammy

I thank God for every officer and pray for your safekeeping on and off duty. You are all heroes to me!

Barbara Durbin

I'm thankful that I can go to sleep at night and feel safe in my community. I'm thankful that they are there when we call them. I'm thankful for all the thankless everyday things they do, and the not so everyday.

Amy

Officer Jake Bettin helped me this morning and I wanted to thank him. I noticed an injured wild rabbit on sidewalk on my way to work today at the church at 60th and Blondo. I was already running late for work but I had to stop and try to help. It took me about five minutes to catch it and put it into my car. ...I hadn't exactly thought through what I was going to do once I got it. My plan was to drive to school and hopefully have NHS meet me there to hand it over. I was about to leave thinking about how late I was going to be and this officer drove past me. I honked and he circled around. I told him how silly I felt doing this but I couldn't just let it lay there and suffer. He called NHS for me and they said they'd be out in ten minutes. I couldn't wait that long so the officer took the bunny from my car, placed it in the grass, and sat there with it until NHS came. This probably seems like such a silly waste of time to other people. It meant so much to me, though. Thank you so much for your help Officer Bettin!

Nicole

On Sunday, April 12th, I was in the UNMC ER. After being treated there, my husband and I went on an errand. Sunday was raining very hard at times. We were on our way home on 50th ST headed north. As we were going under the via dock, just north of "F" St, my husband, driving 25-30 - as he was at the low spot going under the railroad and interstate bridge, we drove in and floated out, water going over the hood. Of course, the car died. An officer, Todd Newman made sure we got home safely. We would like to thank him as it was truly appreciated.

Barbara

We do know that our deceased son who spent 23 1/2 years wearing the blue as an Omaha Police officer, was 100% devoted to "Protecting and Serving" each and every citizen in our great city. Unfortunately, he did not win the biggest battle that he ever faced in his lifetime. In 2012 he was stricken with cancer. We shared him, and his life, and his love for the OPD during his entire career. We continue to pray for the safety of each and every officer on a daily basis, and want them to know what an important part they play in keeping the city of Omaha a safer place to live.......God Bless all of you. Keep up the good work, and stay safe.

Darlene & Dean

Thank you for having the courage to do what most people wouldn't. You are truly appreciated more than you will ever know.

Hello! I was at Brueggers Bagels this morning off of 40th and Dodge, just grabbing breakfast before coaching at a lacrosse tournament, and the police officer in front of me bought my bagel after nothing more than cordial good mornings. I just wanted to say thank you to whomever that was, and to let you know how touched I was! Thank you for your service. I often run in to officers at the bagel shop, and they are always just nice people. I'm glad to see we have great people in Omaha on the Blue. I support you, and thank you again for all that you do for this city.

Erika

My husband and I witnessed a German Shepherd get hit by a car yesterday morning in the rain storm in front of Hyvee off of 108/maple. A very kind officer, Officer Aaron Gurzick, pulled over and helped this poor limping dog out of the way of traffic and into the back of his squad. As a Civilian who wants to become a Police Officer one day, I thank you. I just want all of you to know, that there are more supporting what you Men and Women do on a daily basis than those against you. Keep your heads up and don't give in. Thank you so much! Keep safe and return home to your families!

I would like to thank, all OPD officers for their hard work and dedication to the citizens of Omaha. Each of you have shown that you can persevere through all of the negativity that has been thrown at you by Omaha citizens. As a family member of a local law enforcement officer, I have seen what a law enforcement officer is. How when you sit down in the booth for dinner out with your family, off duty, you make sure your back is to the wall and your eyes face the door. How when you are driving your kids home from practice after dark, you are vigilant of the vehicle approaching behind you. When a yelling match occurs after a property damage accident in a parking lot, you are the first to step in and provide a calming voice. A law enforcement officer is never off duty, and never will be. Whether retired, out of state on vacation, or simply traveling down a rural highway, your mindset is the same as when you are on duty. First and foremost, you put others first. You go out in crime ridden parts of town, to protect others, while your family sleeps. You approach vehicles at three in the morning, with courage and determination, not knowing what you face ahead. Some kick in doors of a dangerous felons home, all in the hope that it can make the community just a little safer. Some pull there patrol vehicle into the middle of Dodge street at four o'clock on a busy rush hour drive home, to shield the people involved in a personal injury collision. You all risk your lives on a daily basis, and the vast majority of law enforcement officers do not recognize that they are even doing this. Most would say, "I was just doing my job." Well, the citizens recognize it, and a thank you does not suffice. It is a debt that can not be payed back. Regardless of your ethnic background, your gender, or upbringing, you are all blue, and that is a special group of people. As simplistic as it may sound, Thank You. Whether it be for the life saving CPR by a young officer in northwest Omaha a few years back, the detectives who have brought many dangerous offenders to justice, or the many other unseen acts of kindness and bravery you all do on a daily basis, Thank You. "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." - George Orwell

I was in a car wreck yesterday and ended up in the emergency room by ambulance. After being there for a while Officer Brian Vanderheiden (that's the name on the paper given to me) came in. This officer was so sweet. He stayed with me for a while talking and making me smile. Which was much needed :) He teased me about how dirty my car was inside (it wasn't that bad lol) how he couldn't find the registration and so on. At one point, I handed him my wallet for my id and he teased me because he said "no one just ever hands me things, you sure nothing is in here ". lol Anyways, my point is he made a situation that was bad (guy that hit me didn't have insurance, a license and had a warrant) and was able to make me smile. I wanted to send this off so he knows I appreciate him and his time. He was patient and had a lot of empathy for my situation. Two main characteristics that are welcomed anytime. Thank you and please let him know.

Sherry
